Fixing Email Bounce Issues Print

  • 0

Email bounces occur when an email fails to deliver and is returned to the sender. Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix common email bounce issues:

  1. Analyze the Bounce Message:
    • Check the returned email for bounce codes and error messages. Common bounce codes include:
      • 550: Invalid recipient address.
      • 554: Spam-related rejections.
      • 452: Mailbox quota exceeded.
      • 421: Server temporarily unavailable.
  2. Check Recipient’s Email Address:
    • Ensure that the recipient’s email address is correct and exists. Typos are a common cause of bounces.
  3. Mailbox Quota Exceeded:
    • If the bounce message indicates mailbox full or quota exceeded, the recipient needs to free up space in their inbox.
  4. Verify Domain and IP Blacklist Status:
    • Use tools like mxtoolbox.com to check if your domain or IP is on a blacklist. Being blacklisted can cause emails to bounce. If so, follow the instructions to request removal.
  5. Review SPF, DKIM, and DMARC Settings:
    • Incorrect DNS settings (SPF, DKIM, or DMARC records) can cause your emails to be rejected by the recipient’s server. Verify these settings in cPanel under Zone Editor.
  6. Contact the Recipient's Server Admin:
    • If your domain is being blocked by a specific mail server, contact the recipient’s email service provider to request that your domain be whitelisted.
